After a week of locked doors, stirred up dust, and many tough hours from the dedicated staff, the Pioneer Memorial Library is back. Re-opening, but still under-construction the library will begin services on Jan. 21 at 9:00 A.M.
With doors locked for the last week, the library staff redesigned the flow of the space. Library Director Melany Wilkes and her staff took this time to remove every book twice to move every shelf, finding several square feet of usable space.
The redesign is part of a larger $350,000 project, the Board of Trustees approved the addition of a new main entrance to the library. Now updated to fit the ADA accessible laws, Woofter Construction is installing the new entrance right off the parking lot on the East side of the building.
Before, patrons would have to park in the parking lot, then manage to travel the long distance to enter through the original South entrance. Not such an easy feat for every citizen, but by the end of March this won’t be a challenge anymore.
In addition to the new entrance, the library will be installing three “hush pods,” private enclosures that are designed to provide private workspace for collaborations. Whether it be in person one-on-one or virtual, the pods will be a new service available in Northwest Kansas.
The lights will also be brighter and more efficient, with approval to install LED lights throughout the building. The library did get a bargain however, the City of Colby has offered to install the lights cutting nearly $16,000 in cost.
The library has always offered a wealth of services and events for the community, next month they will be hosing the Chocolate and All that Jazz. An event featuring the Colby Community College’s Sunflower Singers, Jazz Band, and some chocolaty treats. Patrons can come with their family, enjoy some live music, refreshments, and get a look at the new space.
