Colby, Hoxie, and Oakley traveled to Larned on Saturday, Jan. 31, to compete against nineteen other schools. Hoxie finished in seventh place with 66.5 points, Oakley took fifth with 71 points, and Colby took second with 123.5 points. The scores are lower than normal as all three team were missing wrestlers due to injury, illness, or they are maxed out on events they can participate in this season.
Colby
Colby was missing a couple of their girls due to injury, Joslyn Bartlett and Morgan Hills were both out limiting Colby’s ability to score points with five weights open. The rest of the team performed well however, with five making it into the finals.
First was Adrian Salcido at 100 pounds, she collected two falls before losing to Larned’s senior Teagan Walker in the finals by decision 6-4.

At 105 pounds senior Aspen Sharpe collected three falls and a technical fall before defeating Dodge City’s Natalia Martinez by fall in nineteen seconds for first place.

At 110 pounds, Gala White earned her way to the finals by collecting two falls and a technical fall. In the finals she defeated Hoisington’s Jayda Bailey by decision 106 for gold. Faith Hoover made it to the finals after wins by technical fall and fall, but she suffered defeat against Hoxie’s Josie Bell at 125 pounds finishing in second place.

Cheyanne Hill was the final Eagle in the finals at 130 pounds, earning three wins by fall and one by major decision 10-0. Unfortunately, she suffered a loss by fall against Oakley’s Laura Smith.
Makenzi Rhymer, Dallis Stieben, and Alana Fabrizius finished the day in third place, while Heidi Gray ended in fifth. Next up for the Eagles will be their League tournament in Scott City on Friday, Feb. 7.
Oakley
The Lady Plainsmen of Oakley showed up to Larned with five girls missing due to participating in enough events for the season. The girls missing were consistently in the finals, and their points were missed for the team.

Oakley had three tournament champions out of four wrestlers, Laura Smith was the first to find gold by collecting five wins by fall on the day at 130 pounds. First, she pinned Kingman’s Indigo Nichols, then Haven’s Lily Wickey, then Hoisington’s Lola Beaver, then Lakin’s Miley Roth before a finals match with Colby’s Cheyanne Hill. The finals match was her longest of the day, going into the second period before Smith was able to win the match by fall.

At 140 pounds, Brooke Smith received a first-round bye before marching to the finals by pinning Liberl’s Amarrah Turner, Colby’s Makenzi Rhymer, Hoisington’s MaKiah Webber. In the final, Smith earned her gold medal by defeating Ellsworth’s Sophie Homolka by fall in the second period.

At 155 pounds Cali Wagoner won her bracket by pinning her way to the finals. She had a bye in the first round, and then defeated Stafford’s Cora Martin, Hugoton’s Ruby Tinoco, and Colby’s Dallis Stieben by fall. For the final, Wagoner defeated Haven’s Trista Rogers by major decision 14-0.

Abbie Mandeville was the last Plainsmen to medal taking fourth place at 190 pounds, next the team will be dualling the Scott City Beavers on Feb. 6.
Hoxie
The Hoxie Indians started the day missing one of their wrestlers but still had a good day on the mat. Finishing with two tournament champions, the Indians struck gold with 120-pound Mariah Barnett and 125 pound Josie Bell both finding the top of the podium.

Barnett earned gold by winning three straight matches by fall, first against Dodge City’s Avril Castanada, then beating Lakin’s Jersey Gonzalez before taking down Larned’s Ivy Hope in the finals. All three falls came in 4:33 of action.

Bell had a slightly larger bracket, she received a first-round bye before marching to the finals by defeating Scott City’s Avery Gonzalez by technical fall 17-2 in the second round, then she collected falls over Colby’s Faith Hoover and Haven’s Tristel Schroeder before a rematch with Hoover in the finals. Bell finished the day by defeating Hoover for a second time, both by fall to win the 125-pound division.

Hoxie had three other girls find the podium, Keyara Mader took home third place at 135 pounds, Sarah Dardis took fourth at 155 pounds, and Estefania Castaneda took seventh at 190 pounds.
Next the Hoxie Lady Indians will be traveling to Phillipsburg on Feb. 7 for their last tournament before the post season begins.
