From NWKS Radio in Colby and Goodland KS: Yesterday afternoon, March 14, a sudden and intense dust storm swept through Northwest Kansas, bringing near-zero visibility and causing a series of devastating accidents. The storm hit quickly, and in a matter of minutes, the region was plunged into chaos, with multiple crashes reported across the area, including a major pile-up on Interstate 70 near Edson, KS. It is a somber day for our community as we process the aftermath of this tragic event and work together to support those affected.
Our hearts go out to the local emergency personnel, tow companies, law enforcement, hospitals, and all those involved in the accidents. Their tireless efforts to respond to the situation have been nothing short of heroic. We stand united in our prayers for their safety as they continue to work around the clock.

Road Closures and Ongoing Cleanup
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) took swift action, shutting down several major highways due to the dust storm and resulting zero visibility. By late afternoon and into the evening, Highway 40 between Sharon Springs and Oakley, Highway 27 between Tribune and Goodland, and Interstate 70 between Goodland and Wakeeney were all closed for safety reasons.
As of this afternoon, March 15, Interstate 70 remains closed between Goodland and Colby for an extended period of time. Travelers are urged to use Highwayt 36 in North Kansas and Highway 24 between Goodland and Colby as an alternate route, though both have become extremely busy due to the detours.
Crews are working tirelessly to clear the wreckage on I-70 near Edson, where a major pile-up occurred. The cleanup is expected to continue throughout the day as emergency responders and wrecker companies work to remove the vehicles and assess the damage.

State of Emergency Declared
In response to the catastrophic events, both Thomas County and Sherman County have declared a state of local emergency. Formal declarations will be made on Monday. The joint efforts of state and local agencies—including the Kansas Highway Patrol, local sheriff's offices, fire departments, EMS services, and other organizations—have been essential in managing the crisis. Their dedication in the aftermath of the storm has been invaluable.
In addition to the physical damage, a number of motorists have been transported to local hospitals, and emergency shelters have been established in Goodland and Colby. If you are attempting to locate a family member or loved one who was traveling through this area, the Kansas Highway Patrol has set up a dedicated hotline at (785) 827-4437.
Fatalities and Injuries
At approximately 3:22 PM on March 14, a strong weather front, fueled by high winds from Colorado, moved into the area, rapidly reducing visibility to near zero. As traffic slowed, multiple crashes occurred, involving more than 50 vehicles. Tragically, eight fatalities have been confirmed, with many more injured. Emergency responders continue to assist those in need, and the Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) and Commercial Vehicle Inspectors are actively investigating the scene.
The investigation into the cause of the pile-up is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather all the necessary information. As of now, Interstate 70 between Goodland and Colby remains closed until further notice.
