The Colby Community College Lady Trojans hosted the Butler Community College Grizzlies on a rescheduled Tuesday afternoon at the Colby Event Center. The game was pushed ahead to Feb. 11 due to the fierce winter storm expected in most of Kansas beginning on Tuesday evening. Colby ended the game losing a rough one to Butler after a lopsided three quarters of play, Colby lost 50-34.
Colby entered the game at (13-11), but had lost three of the last five games while Butler was entering the game winning four of their last five games, sitting at 16-5 and in fourth place in the Jayhawk conference.
The game started off very tight with both teams sticking together tied at 9-9, with 2:43 left in the first quarter. The Trojans then earned a tough call receiving a foul, Butler only made one free throw giving what looked like the advantage to end the quarter. However, Jera Kruleski hit a deep buzzer beater to end the quarter with the Trojans up 10-12.
Butler came back early in the second period to take a two-point lead, and then Colby started to fall apart. They were missing shots, turning the ball over, getting called for offensive fouls, and increasing the frustration amongst the team as the quarter dragged on. Butler continued their grind and pulled out an eight-point lead going into halftime, 28-20.
The third quarter didn’t improve at all for Colby’s as their offense came to a standstill, due to Butler being aggressive and more physical. Butler pushed the lead to eighteen points by midway through the quarter, but finally Colby was able to stop the bleeding and hit a crucial three-pointer with 2:28 left in the third. That was the only bucket that Butler allowed Colby to have ending the period 42-23.
The fourth quarter maintained the theme of the night, it just wasn’t a good day for the Colby Lady Trojans. The Butler defense was tremendous in the game, they brought a few girls with a ton of length, and they made it challenging for Colby to get comfortable on offense. Butler went on to win the game 48-34 sinking Colby’s hopes for a comeback.
Sophie Bennett led Colby in scoring with 11 points, followed by Jera Kruleski with 9 points, while Butler was led by Ashley Singhateh with 11 points. Next Colby will be hosting Pratt on Feb. 15, and then traveling to Seward County on Feb. 19.
