In a heartfelt decision-making process that had him weighing his future in football, Linkon Cure officially committed to Kansas State University, signing his letter of intent this week. The versatile 5-star athlete, whose choice boiled down to Kansas State and Oregon, detailed the sleepless nights and reflective moments that led to his decision.
Cure admitted to an intense final stretch, including a sleepless night before the announcement, where he pondered his options. Oregon, the current number-one team in the nation, offered a compelling mix of academic opportunities, elite football facilities, and a strong coaching staff. However, the geographical distance and the pull of family kept Kansas State in the running. "Ultimately, I made a choice, and I'm happy with it," Cure shared.
Kansas State, closer to his family and rooted in his values, became the logical choice. "Being able to play in front of 40 family members instead of just a few at an away game stood out to me," Cure explained. Proximity to loved ones and a chance to make a personal and football impact solidified his decision.
Despite committing verbally in the summer, the months leading up to his signing were challenging. Oregon’s coaching staff maintained a strong recruitment push, with calls and conversations happening weekly, including a lengthy discussion the night before his final decision. "I even had a commitment graphic ready for Oregon," Cure revealed, highlighting how close the decision was.
In today’s era of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals influencing collegiate recruiting, Cure emphasized that his decision was never about money. "I took a lot less choosing Kansas State," he said, underscoring his focus on football and his aspirations for the NFL.
Looking ahead, Cure is excited about the Wildcats' plans for him, starting with the possibility of scoring his first touchdown in Ireland, where Kansas State will play next season. His initial role will likely involve a hybrid flex tight end position, with opportunities to transition as he progresses through their strength and conditioning programs.
Cure joins Kansas State at a promising time. The Wildcats, finishing 8-4 in the regular season, boast a young team with significant potential. Cure looks forward to contributing to the program's growth. Before diving into collegiate football, he will participate in the Army All-American Game on January 11th and finish his high school basketball & track seasons.
Reflecting on his journey, Cure expressed gratitude for his faith, family, and support system. "I believe this is what God wanted me to do, and I'm ready to get to work," he concluded.
