Douglas Richard Austin was born January 14, 1953, to Richard and Estella Austin, in Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. He passed away April 3, 2025, in Colby, KS.
Doug and his two sisters grew up around the Edson community. He graduated from there and continued his education at the Goodland Vo-Tech school, studying auto and diesel mechanics. He would go on to work for different companies in Nebraska before returning to Saint Francis. He eventually opened his own mechanic shop and later sold cattle equipment and trailers.
Doug married Paula Sprague and together they raised three wonderful children, Christopher, Joseph and Jennifer.
He enjoyed sharing his passion for racing with his children. Go-Karting was the start and then it moved up to the open track with Joe. Many long hours were spent in the shop rebuilding motors, passing on his mechanic skills and tricks. Some flying tools might have been observed. When Jen became interested in horses/barrel racing, he was there to support her in every way.
Fishing was how he relaxed and even ice fishing was tried. We imagine him there now.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents and son Christopher. He is survived by his children Joe, of Goodland, KS and Jen and Preston, of Goodland, KS; sisters, Gayleen Thompson, of Osawatomie, KS and Relda Heady, of Yoder, CO; several nieces and nephews and a host of other family members.
Private family services will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to Jennifer Austin to be designated later and can be sent in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701. For information or condolences visit baalmannmortuary.com
