The Colby Trojans took to the field against the Dodge City Conquistadors in a thrilling Saturday doubleheader that showcased explosive offense, dominant pitching, and standout individual performances. The teams split the matchups, with Dodge City taking the first game in commanding fashion before Colby bounced back with an impressive victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Big Third Inning Propels Dodge City to Victory
Dodge City erupted for nine runs in the third inning, securing a 14-4 win over Colby Trojans 2025. Colby got off to a promising start when Kylan Sorenson singled in the first inning to drive in a run. However, Dodge City quickly responded with a two-run homer by Campbell Anderson in the second, taking a 2-1 lead.
The game’s momentum shifted dramatically in the top of the third when Dodge City’s offense exploded for nine runs on five hits. Costly errors allowed two runs to score, and key hits from Anistyn Marcotte, Kaylee Kinsinger, and Karen Galaviz added to the onslaught. Whitley Cash capped off the inning with a three-run home run to right field, putting Dodge City up 11-1.
Colby attempted to rally in the bottom of the third, as Sofia Valenti blasted a two-run homer to left field. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Dodge City’s commanding lead. On the mound, Colby’s Mia Rauzi started strong but ran into trouble in the third, finishing with six hits and 10 runs (only two earned) over two and two-thirds innings. Marcotte earned the win for Dodge City, allowing six hits and three runs over three innings while striking out two.
Dodge City’s offense was fueled by Marcotte’s three-hit game and Anderson’s four-RBI performance. Colby’s Sorenson went 2-for-3, leading her team in hits. Despite their best efforts, Colby couldn’t recover from Dodge City’s early surge.
After falling in the first game, Colby came out swinging in Game 2, defeating Dodge City 10-2. The game was highlighted by Tiffani Mein’s outstanding three-hit performance, including a solo home run. Colby struck first when Valenti delivered a two-run homer to center field in the first inning. They continued to build their lead in the second, as Jenna Funk doubled to left field, driving in two more runs.
In the third inning, Colby extended their advantage to 6-0 with an RBI double from Mein. Dodge City finally got on the board in the fourth when Riley Moore launched a solo home run to center field. However, Colby continued to pile on the runs in the fifth. Mein hit a solo homer, and Funk delivered another clutch double, scoring two more to push the lead to 10-2.
Colby’s pitching was on point in Game 2, with Giovana Villalobos-Carrillo tossing four solid innings, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out one. Katelyn Zukewich closed out the game with a scoreless inning in relief.
Mein’s stellar day at the plate (3-for-3 with a homer and a double) powered Colby’s offense, while Funk added a 2-for-2 performance with four RBIs. The Trojans’ defensive execution was flawless, committing no errors in the field.
For Dodge City, leadoff hitter Karen Galaviz led the team with two hits, while Moore and Galaviz each contributed an RBI. The Conquistadors also showed aggression on the basepaths, stealing three bases in the game.
Looking Ahead
With the doubleheader split, Colby now shifts their focus to their next matchup against Barton on Wednesday. They’ll look to carry their momentum from Game 2’s dominant win and continue their strong offensive and defensive performances.
Meanwhile, Dodge City will aim to bounce back and build on their offensive success when they take the field again.
