
The Colby Lady Eagles (21-2) have made the most of this year’s senior campaign, after going undefeated in conference play, they found themselves facing off once again with the Goodland Cowgirls (14-7-1). This time they were in the sub-state final squaring off at the Scott City Event center for a ticket state. This was there fourth time playing the Cowgirls this season, and all games went to the Eagles with them defeating the Cowgirls 24-35.
In the first period the Eagles were led by junior Shaylee Holzmeister with 4 points, followed by a three-pointer from senior Logan Nolan to give the Eagles 9 points in the period. Holzmeister kept up her inside pressure through the rest of the game as she earned four shots at the free-throw line in the first half, unfortunately she couldn’t convert any of those shots, but her aggressiveness was felt under the basket.
The Eagles came out from half-time to have the best quarter of the final, putting up 10 points behind Holzmeister’s 6 points, with seniors Ali Flanagin and Alisabeth Barton adding to the total.
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles put the game away with steady free-throw shooting, going 9-14 from the line as a team. They didn’t make any field goals in the quarter, but was able to win by nine, ending 24-35.
The Eagles were led by Holzmeister with 14 points, followed by Nolan with 7 points, Flanagin had 9 points, and Barton ended with 5 points.
The Eagles walked their way into the sub-state bracket as the number one seed, first defeating an unequipped Nickerson (1-19) 18-69, then beating the Russell Broncos (11-9) by a healthy margin of 25-50 on March 6.
For the state tournament, the girls will be traveling to Hutchinson for their first game on Wednesday, March 12, at 4:00 p.m. They will be playing the Osage City Indians (22-1) in the first round. Currently on a 19-game winning streak, the Eagles will have their hands full with one of the best freshmen in the state, Kaelyn Boss has been averaging over 24 points a game this season.
