Building a Stronger Future: The Cheyenne County Kansas Community Foundation's Mission and Impact

by Derek White

The Cheyenne County Kansas Community Foundation, a vital organization dedicated to supporting local initiatives and fostering growth within the community, is a true reflection of what can be accomplished when people come together to invest in their shared future. Established with a mission to "build the foundation of tomorrow," the foundation's work is powered by funds and endowments, which are carefully managed and invested to generate earnings that are then reinvested back into the community.

The foundation has seen remarkable growth over the years, from its humble beginnings in the late 1980s to reaching a milestone of over $3 million in assets as of 2025. While the foundation does not have a direct $3 million to give each year, its investment strategy allows for an annual distribution of 5% of the funds’ three-year average, ensuring that the community continues to benefit from the foundation's financial stewardship.

A Legacy of Support

The roots of the Cheyenne County Kansas Community Foundation stretched back to 1988, when a small group of individuals began laying the groundwork for what would eventually become a countywide initiative. These visionaries were determined to create a sustainable way to support local organizations and projects. By 1992, the foundation had awarded its first grant—a modest $127—but that was just the beginning.

Over the years, the foundation grew, and in 2017, the organization's expansion efforts were furthered when Dane G. Hansen became involved, enabling the foundation to reach all corners of Cheyenne County. Today, the Cheyenne County Kansas Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Greater Northwest Community Foundation.

Expanding Reach and Impact

Since stepping into the role of Executive Director four years ago, Jessica—who was initially unfamiliar with the workings of a community foundation—has spearheaded a number of initiatives to elevate the foundation's presence and outreach. The foundation's ability to provide grants has had a direct and meaningful impact on local nonprofits, schools, and other organizations.

One key initiative is the monthly grant distribution, where the foundation awards money to a variety of causes based on need. In 2024 alone, the foundation was able to give back more than $100,000 to the community, impacting a wide array of projects and initiatives. These funds are sourced from several key funds within the organization, including the St. Francis New Generation Fund, the Cheyenne County Impact Fund, and the Dane G. Hansen Cheyenne County Community Fund.

A Community-Driven Approach

The foundation is not just about writing checks—it’s about building connections and empowering community members to make a lasting difference. Through various events and forums, such as the “Chat and Cheers” community dinner and donor appreciation initiatives, the foundation actively engages local residents in conversations about the future of Cheyenne County. These events serve as opportunities for residents to share their ideas, dreams, and concerns, fostering a sense of collaboration and unity across the county.

The Cheyenne County Kansas Community Foundation has also embraced the challenge of educating local residents on the importance of giving back, especially through legacy gifts and planned donations. The foundation's efforts to encourage people to consider leaving a portion of their estate to support local causes have laid the groundwork for sustained financial growth, ensuring that the community will continue to thrive long after current generations are gone.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, the Cheyenne County Kansas Community Foundation will continue its focus on strengthening donor relations and expanding its impact. A key initiative will be the Match Month event in December, during which the foundation will work to raise $100,000 with matching funds provided by the Patterson Family Foundation and Dane G. Hansen. This event is critical for ensuring the foundation’s financial stability and providing a solid foundation for future growth.

The foundation also has plans to host a youth forum in the summer, which will provide an opportunity for young people to share their thoughts on how to improve the community. Through these efforts, the foundation aims to engage every person in Cheyenne County—young and old alike—to ensure that the community continues to grow in positive ways.

Conclusion

The Cheyenne County Kansas Community Foundation is more than just an organization—it is a catalyst for community development and a powerful tool for creating long-lasting change. By investing in the community and empowering residents to give back, the foundation is helping to create a sustainable future that will benefit generations to come. As they continue to cultivate relationships and foster collaboration, the foundation’s work is just beginning, with much more to come in the years ahead.
